The phragmites shoreline
Probably the best attack to the problem is for this year to chop down and cart it away. The phragmites are 12-feet tall and will take a lot of time to decompose. But planting goldenrod and aster, fleabane, black-eyed Susans, coneflower, cup plant, seeds on the phragmites, maybe the phragmites might be slowed and conquered if we continue to cut down any new growth. There are huge 13-feet high stinging nettles among the phragmites, along with impatiens. Who knows what forest farming of the phragmites might yield? We need to do like the autochthones, and get to know and help nature, not exploit it. Just this first step, is so essential. We, like Tallamy and all our heroes, are experimenting and getting to appreciate the unique local ecosystems all around us.
